Assistance in Obtaining Insurance Coverage
High Risk Insurance Pools
Health insurance risk pools are special programs created by state
legislatures to provide a safety net for people with pre-existing medical
conditions. Each state operates its risk pool differently, although many share
common features. Generally, the pools operate as nonprofit associations governed
by a board of directors made up of industry, consumer, and state insurance
department representatives.
SCHIP
Kids who do not currently have health insurance are likely to be eligible,
even if you are working. Your state, and every state in the nation, has a health
insurance program for infants, children, and teens. The states have different
eligibility rules, but in most states uninsured children 18 years old and
younger, whose families earn up to $34,100 a year (for a family of four), are
eligible.
Medicaid
Medicaid is a jointly-funded, federal-state health insurance program for
certain low-income and needy people. It covers approximately 36 million
individuals including children; the aged, blind, and/or disabled; and people who
are eligible to receive federally assisted income maintenance payments.
Medicare
Medicare is a health insurance program for people 65 years of age and older,
some disabled people under 65 years of age, and people with end-stage renal
disease (permanent kidney failure treated with dialysis or a transplant).
Medicare Supplements
Medicare Supplements or Medigap insurance is available in all states, with
several states providing guaranteed issue to the disabled under 65 population.
These supplements provide a benefit of 20% to pay the difference between the fee
charged and the Medicare Part B coverage.
